Feng Shui Colors

Color is part of every space we occupy, and color can have a great impact on the energy in our spaces. Just as the placement of objects is a part of Feng Shui, so is the placement of color.

The core function of color is to help our vision and assist in lighting our spaces. Color does this by the way it reflects and distributes light. The combination of light and color can be used to help achieve harmony in our living and working spaces in addition to merely helping us see better.

It's obvious that a poorly lit or darkly painted space would cause us to struggle to see. This would definitely result in a negative energy environment which would inhibit productivity and creativity. But bright lights or bright shiny paint could equally cause negative energy to exist in a space. The trick is to balance the light and color to achieve an environment that supports the intended energy flow for that space.

A bedroom needs to have a soft blend of both warm and cool colors to support relaxation and intimacy. It might be more desirable to have harder and bolder colors in a kitchen to promote the energy of appetite and taste. But to successfully affect energy flow with color, you must know these basic Feng Shui color rules:

Red is auspicious, green represents longevity, yellow for authority, blue for heavenly blessings, and white is purity. Colors are also yin or yang. The cool colors of blues and greens are yin. Red and yellow colors and tints are yang.

To achieve balance, contrasting yin and yang colors should be used. Balancing strength in colors is also important so as to not allow a space to become too light or too dark.

Besides reflecting basic moods or energies, color can also be used to create illusions of size, depth, or texture. The illusions color can create in a space are very powerful and can easily dominate an otherwise balanced environment.

One last note on using color and Feng Shui...color is a vibration. A vibration of reflected light. Each person will be affected differently by the color balance of a space. But even though one individual may react differently than another to the color of a space, adhering to the basic rules of color balance will help the energy flow in your spaces and result in good Feng Shui.
